I'm considering visiting a friend in the USA for 6 months and am a Canadian with a Canadian job. I want to work remotely while I'm there visiting in the USA. I will still be paid into my Canadian bank account an plan to return. Is there anything I need to do?
Hi Mike,
Do not stay in the US for 183 days or longer; otherwise you will become a resident of the US for tax purposes as per the 'substantial presence test.' If you are working in the US you are liable for US taxes. This means that you have to file a US return (1040NR) and pay US federal + state taxes. You will also need a US Tax ID number (ITIN).
Taxes that you pay to the IRS will be credited to you on your Canadian tax return.
