Hi,
I got Canada permanent residency in May 2018 and spent 15 days in canada during 2018(i dont have home, driving license or any other social tie in Canada). Now i have received a job offer from Canada and will move to Canada in Sept 2019. My employer has asked me to fill TD1 form. On page 2 of the form i have checked the box that i am non resident for year 2019 and will receive no personal tax credit. Is it the right option for me? If yes then do i need to resubmit this form for 2020 to claim personal tax credits?
Further, as per my employer i can claim eligible moving expenses to certain limit( i.e one way air ticket, temporary accommodation in hotel). Can i buy business class air ticket? If i spend under limit. Or is there any restriction of ticket class under eligible moving expenses?
You will be a 'part-year tax resident' for the 2019 year. As a result, you will be eligible for the Basic Personal Tax Credit for the period of time that you are a resident of Canada (September to December 2019). You will file a part-year resident tax return for the 2019 year with the CRA, and this return is due by April 30, 2020.
If you pay for moving expenses before you become a tax resident of Canada, you will not be able to deduct them on your personal return.
