Left Canada in 2021. Did not file an EMIGRANT return with Departure date.

2021,2022,2023 & 2024, I have been filing as a Resident when I was a non resident.

I need to correct this.

I have to send a NR73 form which will confirm my non residency to CRA from 2021 onwards. Plus I have to send a cover letter with it explaining my situation.
Also a T1-Adjustnent for 2021 with the correct departure date.

Can I send all 3 documents by uploading them on My CRA Account? Or do I have to mail it in?

Change My Return doesn't work as it doesn't allow the departure date to be changed.

Refile also doesn't work as it doesn't allow departure date to be changed.

So how do I submit these documents to CRA now? I live abroad now. So UPLOAD will be easier for me. But is it the right way?

Maybe they want Mail in only.

Should I also call CRA & explain the situation to them? Should I do it before or after, I send the above documents?

Hi Sajid,

Thank you for your message.

You're correct that CRA’s Change My Return and ReFILE services do not allow changes to the departure date from Canada. Since you need to correct your residency status retroactively from 2021, here’s how you should proceed:

1.Submission Method:

Unfortunately, the NR73 form and T1 Adjustment with a departure date cannot be uploaded via your CRA My Account. These documents must be mailed to the CRA. CRA requires original signatures for certain adjustments, especially those involving residency status.

2.What to Mail:

  • Completed NR73 form
  • Detailed cover letter explaining your situation (dates, ties severed, where you’ve been living, etc.)
  • T1 Adjustment (T1-ADJ) form for 2021 with the correct departure date

You can include all three documents in one envelope and mail them to your CRA Tax Centre. I can help identify the correct address if you let me know your province of residence before departure.

3.Calling CRA: It’s a good idea to call CRA first and explain your situation. This helps:

  • Confirm that your documents are being sent to the correct department.
  • Get notes added to your file, so CRA agents are aware of the context when they receive your package.

When calling from abroad, use CRA’s international number: +1-613-940-8495.

Let me know if you'd like assistance preparing the documents or reviewing your NR73 and T1-ADJ forms before submission.
