I cannot use REFILE or Change My Return in My Account to do my T1-ADJ because I want to change/add my DEPARTURE date on the first page of T1.

After doing that do I have to mail the T1-ADJ form to the tax centre? Or can I just upload it in My Account section - Upload documents.

Will it be processed if I upload the T1-ADJ? Or will it go to the wrong department, wrong person? So I have to mail it in to the tax centre mentioned?

Also for the year I am doing the T1-ADJ for. Should I redo the T1 taxes for that year also and print them and send the amended return along with the T1-ADJ for that year. Or just T1-ADJ is enough.

Hi Demetra,

Thank you for your message — great questions, and I'm happy to clarify.

1. Changing Your Departure Date (After Assessment)

Once a tax return has been assessed, CRA will generally not allow you to change your departure date using just a T1-ADJ form.

To change your departure date, you must first file Form NR73 – Determination of Residency Status (Leaving Canada) with the CRA. This form allows CRA to review your facts and issue an official Letter of Determination regarding your residency status and departure date.

Only after you receive this Letter of Determination, can you submit a T1-ADJ to amend your return based on the new, confirmed departure date.

2. How to Submit the T1-ADJ and Supporting Documents

Once the NR73 process is complete and the CRA has issued their decision, you can submit your T1-ADJ in one of two ways:

  • CRA My Account – Upload Documents Tool
CRA does allow T1-ADJ forms and supporting documents (including the NR73 decision letter) to be uploaded through the “Submit Documents” feature in My Account. Make sure your files are clearly labelled and include:
  • T1-ADJ form
  • A copy of CRA’s Letter of Determination
  • A brief cover letter explaining the requested change
  • 📬 By Mail to the Tax Centre

You can also mail the same package to your designated CRA tax centre (found on your Notice of Assessment). This is slower but equally valid.

  • 3. Do You Also Need to Submit the Full Amended Return?

While not strictly required, I recommend that you include the updated T1 return (especially the first page showing the corrected departure date), clearly marked “AMENDED – FOR REFERENCE ONLY.

So your final submission (after NR73 approval) should include:

    • ✅ T1-ADJ form
    • ✅ CRA’s NR73 determination letter
    • ✅ Updated pages from the amended T1 return
    • ✅ Cover letter summarizing the change
