Can I Be A Tax Resident Of Canada And Portugal At The Same Time? My Husband And I Are Planning To Live There 8-10 Months Of The Year On A Residency Visa. Is There A Way To Avoid Paying The Exit Tax If We Still File Our Tax With CRA Every Year While Living Most Of The Year Abroad? Thank You
You cannot be a tax resident of Canada and Portugal at the same time according to the double taxation treaty between the 2 countries. You are deemed to be a resident of the country where your permanent home is located. If you have a permanent home in both Portugal and Canada, you are a resident of the country where your personal and economic ties are strongest.
