Using canadian credit cards after emigration

Hi,

I emigrated from Canada last year and have already filed my emigration documents with CRA. I have also paid my departure tax. I do have couple of credit cards from Canadian banks. Can I still use them regularly?

I understand that it can be treated as secondary tie but in my case since departure is already done. Does it matter?

Thanks

Hi Sam,

The answer depends on whether you moved to a country with a tax treaty with Canada. If you moved to a non-treaty country, I recommend cancelling your Canadian credit cards or, at the very least, keeping no more than one. If you moved to a treaty country (e.g., the United States), having multiple Canadian credit cards is considered a minor secondary tie and won't affect your residency status on its own.
